So you decided to have a barbecue and you want to use your yard to host it. This task can seem a little overwhelming at first, but with a little bit of planning you will be able to get the job done. The key is to make sure that you have enough seating for everyone, and enough room for food and drinks. This is not something that everyone has the ability to do in an orderly way. In my experience I have found it to be best to not have too many involved in the process. If it’s your home, and you don’t want to trust someone else with the responsibility than you need to handle. Below are several tips and suggestions to help you get started.
Start by making sure that you have enough seating for all of your guests. The rule of thumb is to have at least ten seats more than the number of expected guests. In my experience with parties I have found that a few extra people may show up, so having enough seats is a must. If you don’t have enough chairs, you can put a few homemade benches with some cushions added to it. Visit your local thrift store and purchase a few old benches, then put some outdoor cushions on the benches. This is an affordable option that can really add extra seating to the area.
Tables and umbrellas
When it comes to a backyard barbecue not only do you want to make sure you have enough seats, but you also want to make sure you have some shade in case of rain, and plenty of tables. I have found that if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on those large tents you can use tarps, or you can borrow some tables and umbrellas from friends and family. You may be surprised at how many tables with the umbrellas you can get just by asking. This will save you plenty of time and money in the long run.
Food set up
Buffet style is really the best set up for serving your guests when you have a back yard barbecue. You will need a few long tables, where you can quickly and easily lay out the food. All of the food will need to be covered and kept at the proper temperature. You can use sternos with pans and lids to help keep cooked food hot. This helps to keep food from spoiling, and causing any health concerns later on. For any cold items you will want to make sure that they are all sitting in ice. For example fruit can be placed in bowls which are set in ice. This will help to keep them fresh and tasty. Your drinks should be kept in coolers with plenty of ice. The coolers should be placed at the end of your food table, and the napkins and cups should be placed nearby.
Plenty of lights
You will also want to make sure that you have plenty of lights set up in the yard, so that when darkness falls you and your guests will still be able to see what they are doing. You can use fancy lights, or regular lights. The determining factor should be your budget, and what you really need. Remember that sometimes it’s not about how nice something looks, but just making sure whatever you choose gives off enough light.
