Many seniors start to walk because of health problems. Hiking can be strenuous so if you have never gone hiking before you may want to take it easy to begin with. You do not want to over do it and hurt yourself so start out easy. Do some stretches before you begin your walk.
First get yourself a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Cross trainers or hiking shoes are good choices since they are made to protect your feet and they are light weight. Many sporting good stores have a good selection of shoes for hiking in. Try the shoes on and walk around in them at the store. Make sure they are still comfortable after you have worn them for awhile before you buy them.
Once you have the shoes you can start out walking. Take a walk around the area you live in and stay close to home just in case you get tired or your feet start to hurt. Walk until you start to get tired and then go back. Walk at a comfortable pace.
Everyday that you go for walk try to walk further. Time yourself and keep track of how long you walk. Try to walk for a longer time everyday until you reach the goal you have for yourself. Try to walk at least 20 minutes three times a week. Longer would be better but do not push yourself.
Hiking can make you hot and sweaty. If you find you are hot after your walk do not stop abruptly. Instead slow down your pace and take a cool down walk to get your heart rate to slow down. Do not stop exercising if your heart rate is up.
You may find that walking is hard to do by yourself. If that is the case find a buddy to walk with. Then on days when you do not feel like going for a walk your walking buddy can push you. And when your buddy does not feel like walking you can push them to do it. You can also get a dog to walk with. When you have a dog you need to get the dog out for a walk and that will give you an incentive.
Taking a walk regularly can lower your blood pressure and help you to be healthy. Make a walking schedule to help you go for walks regularly. Keep track of how you feel as you hike to be sure you are not over doing it.
