Throughout the years, your bathtub can start to look dingy and old. Sometimes, it even looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in a long time even though you may have recently cleaned it. I live in a home with three other people and we all share the same tub. We also clean that tub once or twice per week and it sill looks dirty in some spots. You don’t only have to worry about the dirt but the water can leave calcium deposit and rust stains. Unfortunately, the ultimate solution is to refinish your tub. However, there are some things that I like to do that can drastically change the look of your tub and make it look new again.
The first thing I suggest is to use powder bathtub cleaners rather than liquid spray-on cleaners. I found that the liquid spray cleaners often don’t stick to the stains and they just run down into the drain. When using the powder cleaners, you should pour the powder on your tub and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing it with a sponge. You can also use a sponge called the Magic Eraser which works to scrub off the dirt and grime.
If you don’t want to spend money on cleaning products, you can also make your own cleaning solution in your home. I use this method when I run out of tub cleaner and I don’t want to go to the store, I call it magic paste. To make my magic paste, mix baking soda and hydrogen peroxide together to form a thick paste. Apply the paste to the tub and let it sit for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Then, use a scrubber to scrub away the dirt.
Another homemade cleaning solution you can use is vinegar. Vinegar is such a powerful cleaner, I wish I knew about what it could do years ago! The vinegar will help to remove calcium deposits and rust. First, fill the tub with hot water and then pour in a good amount of vinegar. Let it sit like this overnight. The next day you should drain the water and rinse thoroughly. You will notice that the stains are less noticeable if not gone altogether.
If you choose to purchase chemical cleaners from your local store, remember to use them in a well ventilated area. Breathing in the chemical fumes can harm you so open a nearby window when possible and leave the door open while you’re cleaning. I made the mistake once of not opening the bathroom window and cleaning the tub with the door closed. I soon felt myself felling light headed and then I came down with a bad headache, no fun at all. I also find that when using the chemical cleaners they work best if you apply several applications.
Remember, you don’t have to live with a bathtub that always looks dirty. Just follow the tips I mentioned in this article and if all else fails you can always have the tub re-glazed.
