The squash blossom comes from squash vines. The vines of the squash produce many blossoms and not all those blossoms will turn into fruits so you can harvest some of the blossoms to eat just like that. You can buy them at farmers markets or at health food stores. Once you get a harvest of squash blossoms you need to eat them right away because they have a short shelf life. if you need to store them for awhile do not stack them instead store them side by side in the refrigerator can eat them as soon as you can.
The blossoms of squash are very delicate so use care when you are harvesting them. They should be firm and not limp for the best taste. The squash blossom tends to squash and bruise very easily and that can make them less pleasant to eat.
Before you use the squash blossom remove the stamen from the center of the flower. You should also cut off the stem with a knife. Once you have done this they are ready to eat.
You can put them in salads with fresh lettuce and cabbage. Other fresh vegetables can be added too the salad like carrots, celery and broccoli.
The squash blossom can be placed on the side of a dish as a garnish and eaten too.
If you are very gentle you can stuff a squash blossom with a cheese filling or some pureed cashews. Or you can dip them into batter and deep fry the blossoms.
If you are going to slice the squash blossom use a very sharp knife or s scissors to help prevent and bruising of the blossom.
Sauteing vegetables together can make a tasty dish and in that dish of vegetables you can add some squash blossoms. Add some red pepper flakes, garlic and sale and pepper and you can have a spicy side dish.
Squash blossoms may be hard to find now but they will probably grow in popularity and you will be able to find them in more places. As for now they can be a good conversation piece at dinner with guests. Any way you want to fix them they will be unique and new and they go with any dish that you could serve squash with.
