While you were drinking your coffee this morning, you spilled some on your new white cotton shirt. This is sad because now your white shirt is probably ruined. You can try to bleach out the stain or clean it, but your white shirt will probably not look the same. You can change the look of your white shirt with some coffee and turn the shirt brown.
Take the cotton shirt and soak it in a sink of coffee. Make sure the sink will not stain before you do this. If you have a white or light colored sink, it probably will so you can use a plastic bucket instead. Let the cotton soak in coffee overnight or less if you want a lighter color brown. You may need to move the cotton around in the coffee a few times as it soaks to be sure to get an even color. Coffee stains well and will dye cotton, wool or linen a nice brown color.
Try to dye a white wash cloth in coffee to experiment with the color and the technique if you like. Put a clean white washcloth in some coffee and let it soak. Pull out the washcloth every so often to see how it is soaking up the color of the coffee and turning the cloth a nice shade of brown.
After the cloth has soaked up the coffee color hang it someplace to dry. Then wash it and hang it to dry again. Coffee can make a nice brown color.
To make the coffee do the job better add a splash of vinegar to the coffee dye. The vinegar will help the coffee do a better job of dying the cloth.
You can try to dye any cloth that you want to turn brown with coffee. The darker the coffee the better it will dye a color brown. Keep the cloth in the coffee for a short time and the color will be light brown. Let it soak a long time and the color will be more of a dark brown.
Coffee makes an excellent natural dye that can be used on many fabrics. It has not harmful chemicals in it and is safe for using to dye cloth brown. One drawback of using coffee for a brown die is that the cloth you dye may smell like coffee for awhile but maybe that is not such a bad thing.
