My husband worked at a furniture store when my son was born so we got a great deal on a rocking recliner with adorable star fabric. It was perfect for our nursery and it’s still functional today even though our kids are both school-aged. Before you buy a rocker or glider for your nursery, make sure it’s the best investment for your situation.
Before you buy anything, check out the space you have available. Measure the spot where you plan to put your nursery rocking chair or glider. Don’t forget about the rocking motion. Just because the chair will fit into the available space doesn’t mean you’ll be able to rock freely. Take your measurements with you to the store so you can find a good fit.
Test It Out
Do you prefer a rocker or a glider? It’s really a matter of personal preference. The best way to find out is to take a seat — in lots of different seats. Test out different rockers and gliders to see which option you prefer. If you want an ottoman for propping up your feet, a glider is usually a better option. Many nursery gliders come with gliding ottomans.
While you’re testing out the nursery seating, pay attention to the fit and comfort. Do you fit easily into the chair? Does it feel comfortable to your rear and your back? Are the chair arms at a good height for resting your arms and supporting your baby? You’ll likely spend a lot of time in that chair. You want a rocker or glider that is comfortable for the long haul.
All those late nights of rocking or gliding your baby to sleep mean the chair has to hold up to a heavy workload. Choose a nursery rocker or glider that is constructed well. It should feel sturdy and glide or rock freely. You shouldn’t feel like you’re about to fall through or tip over at any moment. Look at the joints where the chair comes together.
You want the rocker or glider to meet your immediate baby care needs, but you also want to choose a piece that you can use even after your babies are grown. Is the chair something you could use in the living room or in another room? Will you and your older child fit in the chair together for reading time?
Often you’ll find a chair that is comfortable but that doesn’t quite fit your tastes. Before you pass up the chair, ask if you can special order a different type of fabric or a different wood color. You can sometimes customize the chair so it better fits into your nursery decor.
With the selection made, you’re ready to order your chair. Make sure to look early as some furniture stores can take weeks to get orders in. Once it’s in your home, you’re ready to rock with your baby all hours of the night.
