A bicycle is a good form of transportation. You can ride faster then you can walk and you don’t need to put gas in it. You don’t contribute to air pollution when your ride a bike since it does not run on gas.
A bicycle can go on roads, in parks and on bicycle trails. You can take a bike to work or to the grocery store if you live close enough. You could even ride a bike on a long trip. When you ride a bike it is important to follow some safety rules.
You should always wear a helmet when you are out riding a bike. The helmet should fit properly being snug but not too tight.
Traffic rules for bicycles are the same as it is for motorists. Stay on the right side of the road and make sure to signal when stopping or turning. Hold your left arm straight out to the left side when you are turning left. Bend your arm at the elbow upward when turning right. If you are stopping bend your arm at the elbow downward.
Do not ride your bike on a sidewalk. Sidewalks are meant for pedestrians not bicycles. If you must go on the sidewalk you should walk your bike until you can ride on the road again.
When riding a bike you should wear bright colors so other people can see you. It may also help to have reflectors on your clothes and helmet to make sure people can see you. When riding at night wear reflectors and make sure your bike has a working headlight and back light so traffic can see you. You should also have reflectors on the sides of your bike so traffic from the side can see you.
Bicycles may not be able to go as fast as a car but they need to obey the speed limit. A bike should not go over the speed limit for safety reasons.
A horn or bell mounted to your handle bars could help at times when you need to be heard. They are not very expensive and they can be a lot of fun.
It is very important to be seen when you are riding a bicycle especially in places where a bike is not expected to be.
Most importantly watch for traffic. As you ride a bike you should know where the cars and pedestrians are so you do not run into them. Watch for road signs and follow them just as you would a car.
