Many people suffer from skin cancer every year. It is a minor form of cancer caused by the suns UV rays. In some cases it can be more severe and lead to serious problems. If proper steps to protect your skin are taken it is fairly easy to prevent this common form of cancer.
If you are trying to avoid skin cancer, the worst thing you can let happen is a serious sunburn. The time of year people are most susceptible to sunburns is right at the beginning of the summer, not during the “dog days” where it is hottest. This is because most people’s skin has not came into extended contact with the sun for several months. That is why I recommend taking a few “test runs” at the beginning of the summer. Short periods of 15-30 out in the sun will allow your body to get a little tan and will reduce your risk of serious sunburn.
Nose and Toes
You may think covering your nose and feet with sunscreen is a no brainer, but in my experience common sense is not always common place. These areas are also very common areas for skin disease. This is because these areas are usually the most exposed to the sun’s harmful rays.
Despite all the protective measures you might take, sunburns still happen. So what can you do after the fact? Well I recommend using aloe vera. It is great for relieving the pain of a burn, but it also helps your skin heal faster and reduces the irritation
No Tanning Beds
In recent years we have come to understand just how harmful tanning beds are. However, despite this knowledge many people still continue to use them; in many cases, multiple times a week. If you or someone in your family has a history of skin cancer then you should pay special attention to avoid these “people cookers” as it can greatly increase your risk of melanomas.
If you know skin cancer is prevalent in your family or your own medical history then it is a good idea to invest in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing for the summer. Also, it is a good idea to wear close-toed shoes when possible. While this will not totally eliminate your risk of skin cancer, it will greatly reduce the amount of UV rays that are able to reach your skin.
