Sending the kids to camp is a rite of passage for American youngsters. Yet when your high school or junior high student lives and breathes music, the average camp experience will not be a lot of fun. Try this selection of summer music camps that tries to gives the kids what they like.
The Walden School: Young Musicians Program in New Hampshire

This camp is for a select group of musicians only. This year, the camp runs from June 28 to August 3. In these five weeks, 50 international students between the ages of 9 and 18 meet up to work on composition, choral singing and other aspects of musicianship. This is a highly selective camp that will only appeal to young musicians who are serious about their artistic expression.
Dormitories at the New Hampshire Dublin School serve as base camp. Waking up at 7 a.m., students have multiple music classes throughout the day before retiring for the evening at 10 p.m. The cost for this year’s camp, which includes room and board as well as tuition, is $7,100. Scholarships are available. If your teen is obsessed with band or orchestra in school, this is the camp to consider.
Florida State University Summer Music Camps: Multiple Band and Instrument Tracks

Where should you send the kids for short-term tuba and euphonium workshops or a marching band leadership camp? Florida State University! Overnight campers sleep at the Southgate Campus Centre, which is a short walk away from the College of Music. Balancing out the daily music camp are optional activities like bowling and short trips to nearby attractions.
The Wednesday to Saturday tuba camp costs $326, which includes tuition, housing and meals. The marching band leadership camp, which runs from Sunday to Friday, costs $421. Other camps – there are currently 15 available – have different starting times and prices. If your child has multiple musical interests, you may be able to combine camps.
University of the Pacific: Music Business Camp in California

Is your teen interested in the commercial aspect of the music business? Offering you six days of camp for teens in grades nine to 12, the Pacific Music Business camp prepares budding producers for careers as recording artists, song writers or engineers. Selling music, promotion and band management are also covered. This is one of the few band camps that do not require attendees to play an instrument.
Since the focus is strictly on the commercial side of the music business, the $820 tuition is well worth the job training the youngsters receive. If you need transportation from the Sacramento International Airport, add $140 to the fee. Do not let your teen embark on a music business career without knowing the ropes! This camp offers youngsters the unique opportunity to learn from the pros.
