With Marvel choosing horror director Scott Derrickson to direct the Phase 3 “Doctor Strange” movie, the next step is to find the actor who will play Stephen Strange. The biggest rumors heading into this important Phase 3 Marvel movie is that the studio wants Doctor Strange to play the role that Iron Man played in the first two phases. While Thor and Captain America were major parts of the franchise, it was Iron Man that carried the Marvel brand to a huge success. That means that the actor cast to play Doctor Strange will have a heavy role to take on.
Here are the top three choices to play Doctor Strange right now.
Jared Leto is on a hot tear right now in Hollywood. The actor, and sometimes rock star, just won an Oscar for his role as a transgendered HIV positive drug addict in “Dallas Buyers Club,” a movie that also won Woody Harrelson an Oscar for the lead role. With that huge win, the next step in Leto’s career is pretty important. With Leto a rock star on top of his job as an actor, he carries himself with a certain swagger, which would make his selection as the very arrogant Stephen Strange work so well. However, after Strange becomes the Master of the Mystic Arts, he is much more dignified, and that would require Leto to step to a new level.
The next name on the “Doctor Strange” casting rumors list is Tom Hardy. This one could make a little more sense than Leto, since Leto has never seemed to gravitate toward blockbusters. Hardy has already taken on a comic book role when he portrayed Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” but switching to Marvel could be easy for the actor. The problem here is that Hardy is already preparing for a number of big movies, including the upcoming “Splinter Cell” adaptation. Scheduling could be a problem.
That brings up the last rumored name for the role of “Doctor Strange,” and the best option of all three. Benedict Cumberbatch just needs to add facial hair and he would look perfect in the role of “Doctor Strange.” Add in his brilliant accent and the arrogance he has displayed to perfection on the TV series “Sherlock,” and you have an actor who could fit Doctor Strange almost as perfectly as Robert Downey Jr. fit the role of Iron Man. Plus, it was just last December that Marvel had discussions with Cumberbatch about an upcoming role. This could be that role.
