This weekend there was a professional golf tournament on television that showcased players displaying a bit of a swashbuckling approach to their games. The players in the last pairing were often swinging with a reckless abandon as they were producing very long drives and successfully pulling off a variety of shot making skills. Their confident attitudes and personalities were very complimentary to the level of play they were exhibiting. To be fair, however, it’s important to mention that the men’s tour also had a tournament on television this weekend.
Thanks to Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie (as well as several other tour players playing in the Kraft Nabisco Championship), the LPGA provided an event that probably peaked the interest of the average golf fan enough to tune in and watch their next tournament. This should be of no surprise to anyone as it is common knowledge that once golf fans are exposed to a certain level of play and entertainment, they want to see more of that same level of play and entertainment. Clearly, the combination of Thompson’s hike it and strike it game and Wie’s too long to hit driver off the tee strategy is exactly what fans of any golf tour want and, quite frankly, expect to see.
For an organization seeming to always be looking for a little more attention, the Thompson and Wie last group pairing is just what the LPGA Tour needed to draw attention to the performances of their players instead of the organization wanting more attention and recognition from others in the business of golf.
If there is a surge now in the number of casual, lukewarm golf fans that are trying to figure out when the next LPGA tournament is and what channel is it on, it can be attributed to all of the necessary elements coming together to create an entertaining golf event, which is precisely what occurred at the Kraft Nabisco LPGA tournament. Indeed, a great golf course in a great location blessed with great weather blended with an ideal mixture of athleticism and personality is an unbeatable combination.
Congratulations are due to Lexi and Michelle. They not only showed us once again just how good they really are, but they also provided a possible blueprint for the LPGA’s future.
