Authors: Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner
The other famous book by the authors Steven Levitt (SL) & Stephen Dubner(SD), (both of whom have the same nick name Steve!), is Freakonomics. I found that more to be fun than prescriptive. The authors have taken a re-look at business world. The new book is more of renditions, examples, mixture and reveling analysis from multiple perspectives of life – industry, sports, nations, products and age-old moral stories. It’s a good mix of different types of thinking put together, that can aid you in problem-solving. The book uses examples of how children can help elders envision a new world if we all pay attention to their curious questions instead of shoving them off.
A little over 200 pages, the book is apparently a brain-trainer. A leader is not a leader unless there are followers. It can be one too. If we adopt the intricacies in the teachings, we go back to the old-world when our ancestors taught us to talk less, listen more and accept ‘I don’t know’. The professor (SL) and the journalist (SD) do concentrate on creating a read to help us with winning goals, creativity, proactive thinking and people persuasion.
The one thing that seems to be a flaw in the book is that the authors look at two extremes -life and economy – simultaneously. The authors claim to revolutionize thinking by equipping us with readiness to solve minor issues in life as well as major problems in global reforms.
The book nevertheless brings forth interesting forgotten facets of life.
It advocates that we should not be lost in the age-old paradigms but still be aware of them so as not to miss out on the best practices.
It teaches us to think fast so that the same amount of intelligence can be used more efficiently and more productively than earlier.
Don’t ignore the existing and past lessons. Combine division of labor with technology and the modern-day business gets the best results.
The authors use the old examples but provide a new understanding around business consultancy. They build their own ideas around the existing findings. They propagate new ways of understanding and solving a problem.
It is available in soft-copy (Kindle), hardcover and audio versions. Either read it or listen to it. It is sold in all major book stores and online book sites.
