When I tell people that I go dancing, most people think that I mean club dancing. Taking shots, getting crazy in the clubs, that sort of thing. Swing dancing is completely different than club dancing. There is technique and skill that goes along with it, and it is an art and a beauty within itself. People go swing and social dancing for all sorts of reason. Some people go to meet new people and make friends, others go to prefect their dance moves. Some people go for a chance to DJ the dances or simply to just have fun dancing and learning. There are so many reasons why dancing is good for you and why you might want to consider trying it out for a hobby!
Dancing is uplifting. Whenever I am stressed out or had a long difficult day at work, I go dancing and instantly feel like a changed person. My bad moods ebb away and I feel at peace and with one in the dance and music around me. When you are dancing, you really don’t have any time to think of anything else. It is a wonderful distraction from everyday life and reoccurring dramas. It frees the spirit of stress and anxiety and gives a sense of accomplishment and inner grace to the body. When I dance, I normally feel very connected to my partner and one with myself.
Dancing is a great way to have physical contact with people without feeling obligated to be with them. Everyone likes to be touched and held. Dancing is a way to get what you crave without having any commitments. Once the dance is over, you can walk away and move on to the next partner. There is no requirements to have a date with anyone after or to owe them anything. The dancing atmosphere should be a safe place to interact with people and dance without any expectations. The dance community encourages people to stray from their comfort zones and experience different people in a manner that makes everyone feel comfortable.
Dancing is a great source of exercise. Forget the treadmill and power walks. Dancing is an exercise and gym in itself! I don’t know how many calories are burned during a dance but I do know that my muscles acne and my body feels wonderful after dancing. It gets your body moving and works various muscles in your legs, arms, hips, and back.
