When a friend is moving, it’s natural to want to help. But your friend might be hesitant to ask or might now know exactly what type of help she needs. You don’t want to force your help on her, but you can offer up your help in these ways that can make the move easier.
Cook a Meal
Moving takes a lot of work. People often skip meals or eat a lot of take out during the process. All that take out gets old and expensive after a while. Cook your friend a real meal or two that she can enjoy with no work on her part. Or make her some healthy snacks she can have on hand for a quick bite to eat between packing boxes.
Watch Her Kids
Does your friend have kids? Offer to watch them for her. It can be quite a challenge to pack with kids in the house. Moving day can also get hectic and kids can get in the way. Plus, all of the packing and activity isn’t always safe for kids to be around. Take one task off of her plate by taking care of the kids. If possible, watch them at your house or another area. This keeps the kids completely out of the way so she isn’t distracted.
Help With the Move
If your friend is handling the move herself, she’ll likely need lots of extra hands. Offer to help her pack boxes, but don’t be offended if she says no. Some people prefer to pack their own belongings. On moving day, be there to help load boxes or clean. She might need her new place cleaned before she starts unloading boxes. Or her old place might need a clean up before she locks the doors for the final time.
Moving is often emotional. You can help out your friend just by listening to her when she needs to talk. Ask her how she is doing. Take her out for coffee to help reduce her stress. That friend time can help her deal with the emotions and stress of the move.
Give a Gift
Don’t forget to get your friend a housewarming gift. The gift can be both useful and sentimental. Either way, a housewarming gift shows your friend that you are thinking of her during this major life event. The gift you choose depends on what your friend has and needs. For example, if this is her first house, you might buy her a set of tools that you put in a bucket.
