COMMENTARY | The Daily Caller is reporting that the Department of Veterans Affairs has come up with a unique way of dealing with the backlog of vets waiting for medical exams at VA hospitals. They deleted the records of the requests.
“Employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) destroyed veterans’ medical files in a systematic attempt to eliminate backlogged veteran medical exam requests, a former VA employee told The Daily Caller.
“Audio of an internal VA meeting obtained by TheDC confirms that VA officials in Los Angeles intentionally canceled backlogged patient exam requests.”
The VA decided that it did not have the resources to conduct the exams. So, on the theory that many of the vets gave up waiting for months or years for their exams, moved out of state, or even died waiting, they eliminated the backlog.
Unfortunately a whistle blower, a former Marine who was subsequently transferred and then fired, recorded a group of VA officials discussing the action. It illustrates the attitude being taken toward veterans by the Obama administration. The current regime has not be shy about spending a lot of money on parts of the government that it cares about, such as social welfare programs. Taking care of veterans who sacrificed themselves seems not to be a great priority.
Of course the VA could have taken a different path, noting the problem of the backlog, and asking Congress for a sort of “health exam surge” hiring doctors to take care of the vets waiting for their exams. That path would have involved airing publicly an embarrassing problem, caused either by lack of funding, government inefficiency or likely both. Finger pointing and blame shifting likely would have ensued.
Now the finger pointing and blame shifting is certainly going to happen on a far greater scale than if the VA had tried to solve the backlog problem honestly. Hopefully it will involve a cleansing at the VA Department, with people losing their jobs and suffering other sanctions.
