When John Kerry , the Secretary of State, said that Jews in an Ukrainian city had been notified to register, the phantom of Adolf Hitler looked alive.
According to Israel’s Ynet News, the Jews living in Donetsk, are under threat of deportation and revocation of citizenship, unless they register.
It is reported that the notice was signed by Denis Pushilin, chairman of Donetsk’s pro-Russian government despite his denial of any connection thereto. Amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the pro-Russian activists seized control over Donetsk against the Ukrainian government.
It appears that the interim government intends to check the Jewish communities due to their support of Ukrainian nationalist movement.
The detail goes to the point of requiring “all citizens of Jewish descent, over 16 years of age and residing within the republic’s territory to report.”
Kerry said, according to Ynet News, ” In the year 2014, after all of the miles traveled and all of the journey of history, this is not just intolerable — it’s grotesque. It is beyond unacceptable.”
It is unclear as of now whether or not the interim government in Donetsk is really responsible for the new development, but one thing is clear.
Nationalistic ideologies are poison to human moral.
We tend to believe that Adolf Hitler was a mad man and under his reign German lost its sanity. But the truth was that it was not Hitler, but ordinary German gave a collective consensus to Hitler’s atrocity and his racial agendas.
Racial discrimination and its subsequent violent atrocity were surely committed by some nutty mobs in old days — so we want to believe.
But it is not true.
We all are ready to repeat the same crime given a chance or the situation makes us desperate enough.
It is our innate instinct to eliminate competitors or even exterminate them.
Humans learn to discriminate others at their birth as their mothers proudly declare how their children look alike in family boundary. And this apparently virtuous pride begat inclusion; inclusion begat exclusion; kinship and we-ism begat patriotism in a larger society.
We are doomed to this inherent and vicious cycle of evil.
