Some St. Patrick’s Day costumes can only be used one day a year. That “Kiss Me I’m Irish” t-shirt won’t get much mileage beyond March 17th. But if you’re looking for an outfit that can do double duty on other occasions during the year, here’s the top five best ideas.
Bottom of the list is the most common costume for St. Patrick’s Day. Sure, it fits the day, but it doesn’t rank higher on recyclability. Wear it beyond March 17th and you’re one step above that “Kiss Me I’m Irish” t-shirt. Sure, you might get away with it at Halloween, but don’t expect much else.
4. Go Green Girl
With Earth Day next month, this costume shows commitment to recycling like no other on the list. It works come Halloween in the fall too. It certainly meets the green requirement for St. Patrick’s Day. It only ranks in at number four because it isn’t otherwise Irish.
It’s so very green that no one would doubt your commitment. Paired with other suits on other days, and it doesn’t scream “leftover from March” either. It’s not particularly Irish otherwise, but a bit more so than Go Green Girl. This suit will serve again in October, and at Mardi Gras with a couple of friends to round out purple and gold.
2. Green Arrow
The CW has a hit with Arrow, and you’ll be a hit, too, with this costume. It’s green, but not obvious. As for multiple uses, this one hits a home run. You’ll be the comic book hero again in October. You can wear it again at a Renaissance fair in summer. If St. Patrick’s Day is rainy, you’ll be the best prepared. And, it’s the most durable costume to stand up to bad weather. Need a Robin Hood costume one day? This one can pass if you find a Maid Marian instead of Black Canary by your side. It only comes in second because it isn’t quite Irish enough.
1. St. Patrick
The ultimate St. Patrick’s Day costume is St. Patrick himself. It works again at Halloween. It’s versatile for wilder parties, and at grandma’s dinner. It doubles as a priest or bishop costume on other occasions. It’s simple, easy to make, and easy to reuse the articles for other outfits. For this list, it wins all around.
St. Patrick’s Day costumes are a fun way to celebrate the occasion. They don’t have to be a one time use. With a little forethought, one costume can serve you all year long.
