Okay – I admit it, I have a love affair with Seth McFarlane’s American Dad. It’s a pretty rare show for me where I can buy into even an episode with a stupid premise because I think the remaining jokes will be funny. It’s an even rarer show where I usually find the premise endearing to watch. While I’m no television expert, I’ve considered all the hijinks of American Dad or at least those episodes on Netflix and I’ve decided which five episodes are the absolute best. (There are some episodes of American Dad where the a-plot or the b-plot is better than the full episode but these are the best consistent all-the way through episodes.)
#5 – Season 7 Episode 4 “The Worst Stan”- I complained in my opening paragraph about A plots and B plots in American Dad. This is one where I absolutely adore the B plot and find the A plot acceptable. However, Roger’s B-plot where he gets a pair of magic shorts that make him gorgeous and he meets Ricky Martin. His romp and fun in this episode is really the part that makes me smile. Additionally, Stan tries to get a friend married so that he can be a best man in a wedding. It’s funny, but not great, this episode’s all about Roger.
#4 – Season 6 Episode 12 “May The Best Stan Win” – In this Francine-heavy episode (she might be my favorite character consistently,) Francine is feeling neglected. Stan is unable to give Francine what she needs until “future” cyborg Stan comes back into the picture. He distracts Stan and woos Francine. Francine is left with a choice between her current husband who suddenly realizes that he’s losing his wife and the Cyborg Stan who understood what Francine was worth. It’s a hilarious romp throughout Virginia for American Dad.
#3 – Season 1 Episode 8 “Bullocks To Stan” – In this hilarious episode at the CIA family picnic, Stan’s daughter Hayley yells at his boss, Avery Bullock. However, later on, Avery and Hayley end up together and Stan tries to help Hayley’s ex-boyfriend get back with Hayley to stop the relationship. An American Dad best episode for sure.
#2 – Season 5 Episode 2 “The One that Got Away” – This Roger-heavy episode shows his tracking down someone who “illegally” used his credit card. Roger tracks down and makes life horrible for Sidney Huffman who seems to be a great guy other than the theft. Finally, Roger realizes that he’s actually ruining the life of one of his alter egos. There’s another surprise at the end of this fantastic American Dad episode.
#1 – Season 3 Episode 1 “The Vacation Goo” – I think I might be the only person in the world that considers this the top episode of American Dad ever. I just find the concept so clever and again it’s a relatively Francine-heavy episode. I don’t want to ruin the whole plot but let’s put it this way, Stan wants to send his family on vacation but he doesn’t really want to go with them. So he gets some pods from the CIA to make fake memories for his family – they figure it out and hilarity ensues. My favorite line of the show is “If someone asked me who lived in this house, I’d say “the Asses!” and I’d be right!”
I’ve found American Dad to be one of the best reasons to keep my Netflix account, I’ve probably watched it through a few times and will likely do so again. These are some of the most enjoyable episodes as far as I’m concerned. I hope these recommendations help you as you dive into American Dad for yourself.
