I used to have a Rottweiller, named Samson. In the town where I live, there is a leash law and any large dog that is outside must be on a leash. He was chained in the yard in the summer. One of my neighbors ‘turned out’ a mixed breed stray and would not let her back into their house. They stopped feeding her and chased her away if she went to lie in their yard. She had ‘terrorized’ me from the time I moved into the area. If I entered their street … she would bark at me. After she was ‘turned out’, she came into my yard to eat with my dog. One day, I went out to feed him and ‘they’ came out of his house. The stray looked as if she wanted to run but, stood her ground. She never barked at me again.
They had puppies and she took them all over the small town until she felt the urge to be alone … then, she brought the puppies to my yard to spend time with my dog. He looked so funny with puppies all over him as they walked on him and pulled his ears but, he seemed content with the arrangement.
The stray went into ‘heat’ and other dogs started to follow her into my yard. One night I heard a commotion in the back yard and looked out to see my dog fight off three others that must have been ‘turned out’ themselves. She didn’t help him fight but, she did try to tend his wounds. I went out to chase them away and look him over, He seemed ok.
One of the dogs must have bitten into a vein or artery because he died during the night. After his death, his ‘widow’ continued to bring the puppies until they were near grown.
