In sports there are certain types of fans, there are casual fans, diehard fans, the fans who care about only their team and nobody else, and of course there’s the one group that everyone hates, in wrestling we call them the Smarks. (urbandictionary) You see, on the surface the term smark should be a good thing, it was originally coined for those of us who understand that wrestling is choreographed, that the outcomes are predetermined, yet we’re able to suspend belief enough to enjoy the show, especially when the people on said show have incredible ability in the ring and can work a mic like he’s been doing it for his entire life. (mikespecian) The problem is that with the growth of the Internet Wrestling Community the term has turned into something terrible, nobody wants to be called a smark these days because it’s essentially come to mean an ignorant troll who uses the internet to bash anyone or anything that isn’t his personal favorite wrestler. (wwenews) The problem with the smark of the current age is that they’re the most fickle bunch in any sport or entertainment field, they’ll go on and on about how one person should be pushed ahead of everyone else, once that person is a success they suddenly turn on them and suddenly that person is “overdone” and “being shoved down their throats.” (yahoo)
The IWC pushed to see CM Punk become the top man in WWE at one point, he’s an incredible talent and deserved the push, so nobody really minded the attention that Punk received from the IWC at that point, but then he reached the pinnacle and suddenly everything changed. (bleacherreport) You see, this is their modus operandi, they want to see their favorites become the big star at the top of the business, until the person reaches that level, they loved Edge but when he started winning title after title they wanted him gone, then Punk got that treatment, and it’s only a matter of time before Daniel Bryan receives the same treatment. (reddit) Last night on Raw we saw one of the most shocking, unexpected, and downright brilliant heel turns in recent memory with Seth Rollins turning on The Shield and seemingly joining Evolution, right off the bat this morning the chatter started, people are already stating Rollins isn’t “THAT” good or that his push isn’t deserved, it’s an endless cycle where he hasn’t won a title alone yet but the crowd has already turned against him for his attack on The Shield. (wrestlingnewsworld) The smarks, the kings of the IWC, are slowly killing the business, hopefully someday they’ll realize they just need to shut up and enjoy the show. Learn to be a FAN again first, trust me, you just might like it.
