Strokes are among one of the top deadly killers. It is found higher in the female gender and amongst both genders of the African-American.communities, with Hispanic genders being second due to eating habits, traditions, and due to family ties (DNA).
I have had a stroke myself and taken care of members in my family who have had strokes as well. If you or someone you know has had a stroke and survived, they are an exception to the average person and very fortunate indeed. That’s not counting the side effects or therapy needed to live, as normal a life as possible.
With my own stroke, it was brought on after I had a very life altering surgery. I was so sick and weak. One of my nurses gave me a potent pain shot, she goofed and hit an artery that went straight to my heart. I could feel the onset begin immediately. When I tried telling her what was happening with me, I couldn’t utter a word.
I had to stay in the hospital for six months and had to have therapy for a little over a year. It took me six months to speak without slurring my words. Six months to regain my taste buds back. It took me over a year for my brain to work properly. I had the stroke on the right side of my body.
Gradually, I began to improve. I had a hard time eating, as well as, talking. I had lost 1/4 of my brain usage and it had damaged my memories. I had the hardest time with these tragic complications. Had I not been so stubborn, I would not have survived., Other members of my family had no been so lucky.
It took a little over a year to regain as much as I could, to the way I had been before. I had to have therapy three times a day while I was in the hospital. When I returned home, I had to have therapy once per day. It took six months to be able to chew food. Prior to this, I had to have pudding, ice cream, milk, Jello, or diced fruit. To this very day, I still have problems with my memory, spelling, and a mild speech problem. The right side of my body works poorly. but I am blessed to be alive and to have recovered. Due to the damage, I might not be up to par, but I do still try as hard as I can to bring everything back to me and on the way back to normal.
