We have come to a point in music where old styles are starting to resurface. While there is a major following of house music and rave culture, many people are much more interested in music that provides an authentic glimpse into the human experience. For this reason, there has been a recent rise of both folk rock and soul music. People are looking for music they can connect to on a higher level, and these genres offer that experience to listeners. In the upcoming years we can therefore expect a continued rise in both folk rock and soul music, but there may be a new trend that will make these two genres more dynamic than ever before–amplified classical instruments.
The Electric Violin
As folk rock makes a comeback with successful music artists such as Mumford & Sons and Phillip Phillips, people are wondering where folk music will take us next. While bands such as Mumford & Sons already make use of a wide range of instruments (including the banjo, accordion, and mandolin), I believe the next trend in folk music will be the electric violin. If you have ever seen the movie Raise Your Voice, you know that the sound of an electric violin is extremely dynamic. This instrument can create a resonating sound throughout any performance space, and can captivate an entire audience if it is played well. In order to obtain this sound an electric bridge may be added to the acoustic instrument, or an electric violin may be used. I believe by choosing to use the acoustic instrument, folk bands can maintain a classic look and shock the audience with this new addition.
The Electronic Upright Bass
Since people have been searching for music that truly captures the human experience, soul music has begun to resurface in mainstream culture. On season 6 of The Voice, it is the singers with yearning, soulful voices that are making chairs turn left and right. For this reason, I believe a new age of soul music is underway and the electronic upright bass is the instrument to look out for. In the past, soul artists have made use of the piano, brass instruments, and several woodwind instruments that give the music a vibrant feeling. In upcoming years, I believe soul music will revert back to a more mellow style that can capture the emotional aspect of the music. The unique, relaxed sound of the electronic upright bass will compliment any soulful voice, while adding a new element to soul music that will intrigue listeners.
