The Purge is a decent film. It begins right away yet doesn’t leave you confused about what the movies plot. The main character is James Sandin, played by Ethan Hawke. He is a security system salesman living in a wealthy neighborhood. It’s the year 2020 and the United States government has sanctioned a 12 hour period where all crime is legal, including murder, and police and hospitals cannot interfere.
That is the plot. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Since the movie begins right away, it throws you right into the good stuff. I say good stuff because the film is entertaining and does keep you on the edge of your seat, yet it is extremely predictable. My fiance and I were about to predict what was going to happen next, and we were right every. single. time. That is because the writers used the same antics used by pretty much every other horror movie since the beginning of time.
While the plot is exciting, nothing exciting happens. It is a great idea for a movie, but they failed in the execution. The writers and director brought nothing new to the table with this film. It is an OK film because it’s not a complete bore. Even though we knew what was going to happen, we kept watching because the movie is pretty entertaining, and strangely forgettable at the same time.
In about 10 years nobody will remember this film. Unlike the classics such as The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, and the first couple of Friday the 13th films, which all added something to the genre, were original, and scared the crap out of you, The Purge uses all the tricks that made THOSE movies original.
This movie is entertaining, but is not scary and certainly not original. I do not know why it is called a horror film.
It is a suspense at best. Bottom line: If you want a movie that will keep you entertained but do not like being scared, watch this movie. If you want a good horror film that will scare the bejesus out of you, watch something else. If you want a film where you do not know what could possibly happen next, definitely get something else.
