Music is one of the most popular forms of entertainment; however, the power of music is not known to many. It is a medium that crosses all borders of race, nationality, and culture. Music can have a profound affect on our lives. It has the ability to alter our bodies physically, mentally, and emotionally. While some melodies can bring about positive changes, others can bring stress and tension to the human body.
The power of music is now being utilized in the healthcare industry to decrease recovery time in patients. Amazingly, music has the ability to heal and has been used as a healing source for centuries. The American Music Therapy Association has long recognize the therapeutic qualities of music in rehabilitation, special education, and community settings. A new occupation has risen from this discovery titled “Music Therapist.” Music Therapist utilize music in restoring and enhancing physical and mental health.
Numerous studies have been conducted on behalf of the association supporting the theory that music has the power to produce positive physical changes within the human body. A recent study was conducted on a group of patients following heart bypass surgery, revealing that patients who were played background music needed lower doses of drugs compared to the patients who did not listen to any music.
Music is also a very powerful mood altering mechanism. Various melodies of music can trigger a variety of moods within an individual. Another study was conducted investigating the impact on different types of music and how the music affects mood, tension, and mental clarity. The study revealed that grunge rock music significantly increased feelings of hostility, sadness, tension, and fatigue. Significant reductions were also observed in caring, relaxation, and mental clarity. In contrast, after listening to a much calmer form of music, significant increases in caring, relaxation, and mental clarity were observed. ABC News reported a similar study conducted by Penn State University.
