Science has discovered a quick and easy way to help people develop strong willpower, overcome anxiety and many other issues. Science has discovered that when people express gratitude that their view of the world changes. For example, if you want to quit a bad habit but you simply lack the power to resist the habit you must practice gratitude then that habit will be much easier to resist.
This sounds too good and overly simplistic to be true is a statement that many of you are probably saying to yourself right now. Here is the deal Psychological Science journal has published a study demonstrating the power of gratitude in increasing one’s happiness, and increased ability to control desires.
Gratitude occurs when you are thankful for some aspect of your life. For example, I am always thankful for my family which instills a feeling of gratitude. In other words, gratitude is an emotion we feel when we feel thankful for something. Gratitude can be purposely inspired. To inspire the emotion of gratitude within yourself you just focus your thoughts on something you are thankful for. If you need help with this there are many guided meditations online that will help you develop a feeling of gratitude. You can also write out a short list of things that you are thankful for and review this list on a regular basis.
Although scientist are not sure exactly how gratitude helps people resist their desires and find strength to overcome their bad habits it is known to work. I would argue that this seems intuitive that if you are thankful then there is a decreased sense of need for anything that is not necessary.
The key idea to take away from this is that gratitude is a simple emotion that is pretty easy to invoke. Even though this emotion is simple it has powerful positive implications for one’s life and it is something that people should add to their daily routine to develop will power and improve their lives.
