With Fathers Day just around the corner, I was giving some thought as to what to get my father that would make his day, and the old neck-tie gift was not an option. Since my father just turned 80, my wife decided to cook him a great dinner at our house, and all I had to do was pick the perfect gift. Easier said than done, I thought, but then I came up with a terrific idea. My father likes to watch old movies, you know, the ones in black and white starring the actors that he knew best way back when, and lucky for me, I too enjoy a lot of the older movies, so what better gift can you give your father than quality time together watching old movies.
Since I’m a “baby-boomer,” I have a movie collection that just about covers everything from D-Day to Star Wars, so all I had to do was select some movies that we could enjoy on this occasion, and they had to be movies that were great, exciting and funny.
Since dad is a veteran of World War 2, my first pick was the black and white movie “The Longest Day” starring every actor of his day including John Wayne and Robert Mitchum, and it’s all about the landing on the beaches of Normandy better known as D-Day. And while the men were overseas during the war, baseball here in the U.S. was just about extinct, so the women took to the baseball diamonds. “The Women’s Professional Baseball League” was formed and so “A League Of Their Own” was my next choice. A great movie that has just been picked to be inducted into The Motion Picture Hall Of Fame. With actor Tom Hanks coaching a team that consisted of top name female actresses, not only is it based on a true story, it is also funny and entertaining.
My next selection was the original “Nutty Professor” starring Jerry Lewis who stars as a college professor who comes up with a formula that makes men irresistible to women and is totally hilarious. And since dad loves a good western movie, I chose “Support Your Local Sheriff” with James Garner and Bruce Dern, a western comedy about a sheriff bringing law and order to a small town.
While I think I have the perfect day planned for my father, you will have to plan your Father’s Day based on your own situation, but you can’t go wrong spending a nice day watching a great movie or two with dear old dad.
