Hong Kong is among the most visited countries in the world. There are lots of places to go to, culture to experience, food to eat and people to interact with. But perhaps one of the places in Hong Kong that is visited by lots of tourists, and even locals, is Victoria Peak, the highest point in Hong Kong. Almost all of the packaged tours have The Peak included in their itineraries.
To get there, you have several options: You could go by cab, but you most likely will have to shell out a significant amount of money, especially if you will come from afar; you could take a bus ride. There are several of them around the MTR Central Station that will drop you off at the Peak Tram lower terminus; or you could drop off at MTR Central station and walk up along Garden Road to reach the lower terminus.
Upon reaching the Peak Tram, you’ll see the entrance queue where people are lining up. You then have to pay for the tram fee. There are 2 main types of tickets: The ticket for the tram itself; and the one which includes Sky Terrace 428, which is an observation deck or a place you could reserve for parties and other events. If you don’t want to go up to the Sky Terrace, a single-trip ticket would cost $28. Just a quick note, all dollar values shall be Hong Kong dollars unless otherwise stated and prices may vary from time to time. For a two-way trip up and down the peak, it’s $40. If you want to go to the Sky Terrace, a single-journey ticket will cost you $68 and a two-way trip will be for $80. Tickets for children and seniors are discounted. If you have an Octopus card, you can actually use that to pay for the fee, which is quite convenient. Just make sure you leave some for the MTR.
While the tram is traversing the upward tracks, you’ll start to see the excellent view of Hong Kong. You need to be on the right side to get a better view though. Upon reaching the terminal at the top, there are some shops, food stalls and a foreign exchange counter should you need to change your money to Hong Kong dollars.
One of the main attractions of The Peak is located here, the world-famous Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. There are lots of wax statues here of famous personalities, from basketball players, actors and actresses, singers and of course, world leaders and historical figures. The ticket price is $240 for adults and $170 for children and seniors. Before I forget, if you are really planning to go to Madame Tussauds, you can buy your tickets online and get discounts. Have fun taking pictures, and don’t forget to visit the souvenir shop and enjoy window shopping at least.
From there, you can visit the Peak Galleria mall, walk around The Peak, do some shopping, take pictures and eat at the restaurants. Here’s a trivia. Our tour guide, Anita, told us that The Peak is a prime location and the lots, houses and buildings here are really, really expensive. I started to think that there could be lots of celebrities in this part of Hong Kong.
Let’s go back to the Peak tour. If you choose to go up to the Sky Terrace, you should have an unhindered view of Hong Kong, which is breathtaking. My wife and I didn’t go up there, and instead, we went to the top floor of the Peak Galleria and still had a magnificent and equally stunning view from there, as you can see from the pictures. There are a couple of powerful telescopes you could use for free. Just don’t try to hog it all to yourself, especially when there are lots of people around who would want to use it as well.
My wife and I just strolled around, enjoyed each other’s company, and had a great time strolling inside the malls and shops. We took our lunch there at one of the fast food chains. A Hong Kong trip would most likely be incomplete without visiting Victoria Peak. There are lots of things to do. In any case, just spectacular view alone would be more than enough to take your breath away.
