As many people would guess, when it comes to the paranormal or the supernatural, it is automatically a controversial subject, not only to skeptics, but to those who are religious. Mainly, it is a never-ending battle of skeptics vs. believers, with both sides having strong views on its truth. You have one side believing one thing, and the other side believing something else, and yet where is the common ground? It’s obvious that with skeptics there is nothing but science, and with believers, it’s more spiritual. It’s about time both parties came together and realize that they are basically just trying to prove the same things, only with different techniques.
With skeptics, there are different kinds. You have the kind that are so into religion, they truly believe if it isn’t preached to them in their place of worship, or isn’t in the bible, then it isn’t real, and in fact, they will be quicker to shout “blasphemy” rather than open their minds to what the paranormal is really all about. Then you have the kind that are self-proclaimed scientists, meaning that they’ll only use science or refer to it to prove or disprove something. And if science doesn’t prove it, then it doesn’t exist. These skeptics want hard facts. If it can’t be seen, heard, or touched, there’s no way you can get them to believe it.
Lastly, you have the kind of skeptic that can only be described as “blind eye skeptics.” This kind of skeptic has all the proof placed directly in front of them, and in fact, they have plenty of experience to back up anything that they originally thought was fake, and yet they still claim the paranormal is in no way real, that it’s something people constantly make up. After all, there has to be a logical explanation on the things that’s been happening right? As you can probably tell, I’m a full blown believer. This kind of skeptic, for me, is the most irritating. How can you constantly deny something you’ve seen with your own eyes?
I think when it comes to skeptics, the one thing they have to realize is that not everything in this world has a logical explanation. Not everything can be proven with science, and not everything is meant to be explained. Yes, there are plenty of things out there that science can back up, but if you open your mind and realize that there’s a possibility that science can’t prove everything, and go on a little faith, then maybe it’ll be easier to find a common ground with most believers.
With believers, they naturally have more flexibility in the way they think. Their minds are more open to possibilities that you can’t conceive as a skeptic. One thing that I love about my fellow believers is how hard many try to educate others on what the paranormal is really all about. It’s simply apart of life, the spiritual aspect on what makes this world and us who we are.
I also love how believers, who are also paranormal investigators, try to get some skeptics involved that would like to see for themselves what’s real and what’s not. And this is one thing that truly makes me feel like there is plenty of hope in opening the minds of skeptics, when they willingly get involved. When you get to this point of outside thinking, you realize that “logic” is simply a perception and not necessarily a reality.
Another thing about believers is how they don’t simply go on faith alone, they don’t have the mindset of not using all they can to back up the evidence on their paranormal findings. What further validates their findings, and the existence of the paranormal is evidence. Many paranormal investigators use technology to collect what they find as scientific proof. So with that being said, you have believers who try to use science to bring together the world of science into the world of the paranormal. That’s another step in finding a common ground with skeptics who only go by science alone. Luckily, we are making progress in seeing this happen more and more.
While there’s a long road ahead in this aspect of life, I truly believe that both parties, skeptics, and believers, will begin finding more and more ways on coming together and realizing that everything about life, including science is connected to everything all around us. If we can further use science and groundbreaking technology to prove the existence of the paranormal, then slowly we can all continue learning more about life and the deeper realms in life. Not only what we perceive life to be, but what’s underneath the surface.
