Well here we go again with yet another investigation into the Benghazi tragedy with the Republicans putting together a House Select Committee headed by Rep. Trey Gowdy, the Republican strong-arm out of South Carolina who has 16 years of experience as a former prosecutor. If there’s one thing you can say about the Republican Party, they know how to ride an issue into the ground. They tried to stop Obamacare in excess of 33 times, wasting taxpayer dollars that could have been spent moving this country forward. When that horse couldn’t run any more, they jumped back on the Benghazi quarter-horse for another ride which one hopes that after this ride, it can finally be put out to pasture.
They are still trying their best to somehow put the blame on Hillary Clinton and President Obama, but they are leaving out some important facts that need to be known. First of all, Mrs. Clinton acknowledged that there were some institutional failures of security and intelligence that should have been corrected, and the Obama Administration’s State Department agreed. But at the same time, it was noted that Washington overlooked repeated pleas for more guards and enhanced security at the Benghazi mission, and that budget issues often caused State Department bureaucrats to plead poverty. Even when vital security matters were raised, they were unwilling to make the expensive needed improvements to the Benghazi compound to make it safe
When then Secretary Clinton suggested shifting money within the State Department’s budget to improve security, it was determined that such an essential item as security deserved full funding by Congress, and anything less was not acceptable. And now with another committee investigation about to take place, we look forward to more Republican grandstanding. While they want to keep asking the same old questions, they need to be based on the facts at hand, and not on second hand here-say. And while they stay on this issue, they are not concentrating on the issues that could help them in their run for the White House like Obamacare, which they still want to repeal, the budget, immigration reform, and chronic unemployment.
Mrs. Clinton’s take on this latest committee hearing is that there will always be someone who is not going to be satisfied with any answer to the same questions, so it’s time to move on. I would have to agree with her, and if the Republicans want to do something, make sure America’s diplomatic missions have the money they need to provide adequate security.
