When Cesaro left Zeb Colter to become a Paul Heyman guy, it left a huge hole in the already thin Real Americans WWE faction. Now that Cesaro is feuding with Jack Swagger, Colter is actively searching for a WWE wrestler to be the next Real American. In fact, he went to Twitter to tease the impending announcement. When Colter selects the next member of The Real Americans, his selection could surprise a lot of wrestling fans.
I have no inside information or backstage sources whispering in my ear about who the next Real American will be. However, I do have a lifetime of experience following pro wrestling and the WWE to fall back upon. Today, many of the decisions made by the WWE have nothing to do with wrestling logic. If logic ruled the day, the last Real American wouldn’t have been born in Switzerland.
The WWE of 2014 is more of an entertainment company than a professional wrestling promotion. Many of its decisions are geared towards selling DVDs, marketing reality television shows, producing movies, and selling t-shirts. While it makes perfect sense for an NCAA All-American wrestler such as Jack Swagger to be a Real American, the next member of Zeb Colter’s stable need not possess any such credentials.
Some people may argue that starting out as a reality television star to become famous represents the “real America” of 2014. But from a WWE perspective, The Miz would be the perfect candidate to be the next Real American. Reportedly, The Miz has already begun filming his next WWE Studios movie “The Marine 4.” Having Miz join The Real Americans to help promote The Marine 4 would epitomize how the WWE conducts its business in 2014.
I consider myself a traditionalist as a wrestling fan. And yes, I realize that having The Miz join The Real Americans would drive older wrestling fans crazy. But the WWE may be thinking that Zeb Colter and The Real Americans are so over with fans that they could give The Miz the push he needs to get back to main event status. And even if The Miz starts teaming with Jack Swagger, that wouldn’t stop me and other fans from chanting, “We the People!”
I don’t think Zeb Colter will name The Miz as the next Real American for some time. For now, look for Cesaro and Jack Swagger to feud on their own. Once The Miz is finished filming The Marine 4 in a month or two, look for him to join The Real Americans. And once The Miz has become an established member of the stable, the WWE can use his status to promote The Marine 4 DVD sales later this year or early in 2015.
Yes, this is what the WWE has come to in 2014. I can only hope I’m wrong.
