When my husband and I set out to by a new car, we were just as excited as any other car buyer. We wanted bells and whistles and were easily led into taking the car with the best options. Who wouldn’t want to experience all that their car could offer in additional accessories.
We were excited to try out the satellite radio system in our car. For the first couple of days it was a battle to learn how to use the system. Once we tackled how to find the programs we wanted to listen to we became aware that we were spending more time selecting stations and sorting through various other genres than we were on paying attention to the road. Once our trial period came to an end, we were even more surprised at the cost to keep the product with all the options that we had been enjoying. It was certainly beyond our budget. The cost was nearly equal to a monthly payment each year. This additional money when applied to our car loan would have shaved eight to nine months off of our car loan.
If the satellite radio wasn’t bad enough, the DVD players in most cars today are not only a costly addition but also a danger to the driver as well as other drivers on the road. During the evening hours, other drivers can see the movies being played on the screen and were often found to be drifting towards the car rather than staying in their own lane. The drivers of cars are easily distracted with movies being played and missing vital scenes in the movie. With the overall cost of a monitor and DVD player exceeding two hundred dollars, it may be a safer and more affordable option to allow the backseat passengers to hold portable DVD players with headphones.
A final overrated accessory in my car is the new headlights that most cars are now coming out with. The HID headlights are extremely bright and blinding to oncoming traffic. While they do afford the driver extremely extended vision; they nearly cancel out with the high beams from oncoming traffic. I often wish there was an affordable option that I could do myself on the car to get rid of them.
The best advice I can offer any potential car buyer is to do your research on the options that many vehicles come with. While it may be tempting to want to have everything your friends have in their car be sure that you are aware of the costs associated with it before and after any trial periods. It is also a very good idea to look up on the internet for reviews on accessories.
