We’ve talked about the benefits of black maca powder before and how it can boost a man’s sperm count in seven days, but what about the other colors of maca?
Yellow maca, aka brown maca, is the most popular and common type going in stores today, but red maca root powder is definitely not a supplement to be overlooked. Few stores carry it, but red maca has its own specific health benefits that are well worth looking into.
According to a published by the Journal Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology 2005, raw red maca powder is capable of significantly reducing ventral prostate size in rats, a health benefit that yellow maca was not able to duplicate. Much like how tomatoes also help int his regard,e specially cooked tomatoes, something in the red pigment could well be responsible for this health bonus.
In addition to the prostate size reduction benefits, red maca (as well as black) had protective effects on bone architecture, something that could be especially useful for the millions of Americans whose low-mineral diets often result in skeletal abnormalities or fragile bones, especially in mouth region. The study came from the Universidad Peruana (Lima, Peru) and showed that the yellow/brown maca types do not provide these same benefits.
These benefits translate increased protection against prostate cancer and improved bone density and structure from people using the red version of the maca powder. Although animal studies like these do not always translate to human subjects, they can often be a good indicator of the types of health benefits provided by each food or supplement.
Red maca root powder is a bit hard to find, but some websites are selling now as word spreads about its many unique healthful properties.
Some supplements include all three main colors of maca root powder: red, black and yellow, into one supplement so that a wide variety of positive effects can be experienced. Maca is a root vegetable/herb that grows high in the oxygen-rich areas of the Andes Mountains in South America, especially Peru, and it has been used by the natives for centuries for its restorative properties.
Red maca root powder goes well in smoothies, or you can simply take a teaspoon of it or two each morning and night to experience its health benefits. Users should also note that it helps to “cycle” red maca powder every month or so, on one month and then off one month, so the body doesn’t get too used to it.
