First and foremost if you’ve had serious constipation happen multiple times and/or have a severe case such as hard impaction or even worse obstruction you NEED to call your doctor immediately because forcing something that shouldn’t come out of you will cause serious damage. I am not a doctor, I suffer from a megacolon and have had serious issues with constipation for a long time.
This is for people stuck in that in between: It’s bad enough for me to be extremely worried but not bad enough to go see a doctor.
For common constipation the age old remedy of prunes, water, mineral oil and colace on top of fiber and exercise will work just fine.
For extreme cases this is my 100% solution. If this solution doesn’t work it means there’s something wrong and again I advice you to see a doctor. Only use in extreme cases or you will develop a dependency on this solution. Step one get the right products. There’s a difference between stool softener and stimulant, if you’re backed up a stimulant will only help getting you to go to the bathroom it won’t help ease the passing. So get Magnesium Citrate, Preparation H, Miralax and fiber bars or prune juice (mineral oil is optional). The key component is the Magnesium Citrate. it’s a saline laxative in glass bottle that will flush you out. This only cost 2 dollars and it’s just as if not more effective than enemas. First eat some Fiber One bars or drink prune juice (or both). Then take the Magnesium Citrate (it taste pretty bad but it works). This will liquify the stool starting from the top and going to the bottom. I’d recommend drinking lots of water with the Magnesium Citrate. If you can try and give the drink enough time to really work it’s magic, if you can drink it an hour before you go to bed. In the morning (or after at least 6 hours so you don’t overlap medications) take the measuring cap off the Miralax and fill it half way. Mix it with water or prune juice, those are the only things you should be drinking during all this. You could use your favorite drink as a chaser for the Magnesium Citrate though. So if you’ve figured it out, it’s softening first then stimulant after. Now before you try and go to the bathroom I would use Preparation H before you go, this acts as a numbing cream which will help you relax as you go and will prevent discomfort. With all this you shouldn’t even have to push, it will be like passing soft serve ice cream.
If you’re impacted you really should call your doctor however impaction will not be as easy to treat at home. Any and all laxatives or stool softeners will not be able to get through to all of your colon. Everything towards the exit will still be rock hard. Again call your doctor. But if you want to try anything try this at your own risk, impaction is really something your doctor should handle but I passed impaction by doing this.
Follow the steps in that first wall of text, but instead of Miralax you’ll want to get Fleet Suppository or you could get an enema if its that serious but the enema + anything else will cause bad stomach pain. The Magnesium Citrate should be done first along with as much water and prune juice you can drink. Then after a 4 hours or more put the Fleet Suppository in. This will help soften the back and front of the stool. Make sure you use Preparation H before you go so it will hurt less. This method will be much better with the more fiber, water and/or prunes you take, you’ll also want to give the solution time to soften the stool. I know moving around while constipated or impacted is miserable but try and get some activity in while this is going on, it will help. Now the enema or fleet suppository (like a little gel cone) will probably make you feel like you have to go instantly, I’d do the oral solution then give it time before you move on the enema or suppository.
Again I’m not a doctor and I’m just mentioning what I’ve tried and what worked. I suffer from megacolon and I go to the bathroom once every 5 days. That’s just how my body works, I’m due for a surgery to try and fix my colon. I waited to long to get tested and ended up with a toxic megacolon and serious damage to myself. The only warning sign I had was my irregular bathroom trips, so again I’ll beg you… go see your doctor.
PS – Personally the taste of Magnesium Citrate is just too much for me, its really bad. All of them from Lemon, Cherry and Grape they’re just awful. I’m very sensitive to taste so that may just be me, I throw up easily. But they do make them in pill form, the brand is Nature Made. The liquid you can find at any CVS, Walgreens, Walmart or anything like that. The pills are a bit harder to find. Also the pills won’t work as well as the liquid, the pills are in 250mg and the liquid is in 1.7 grams by the ounce. I’ll put some pictures up. And no you can’t take a bunch of the pills to = the liquid’s dosage. I know it taste bad, try the grape or cherry flavor. Add some sugar? Maybe mix it with fruity drink. Or do what Homer Simpson did and coat your entire mouth in candle wax…. no just kidding please don’t. I know I’ve thought about doing that once or twice, just plug your nose and know it will help.
