The songs that promote Marijuana are astounding. They all seem to point out just how alluring the herb really is. Songs from popular artists like Snoop Dogg, Janis Joplin or Bob Marley, seem to bring a positive spin on the so called drug. The running theme in their songs is quite simple: Marijuana inspires beauty, serenity, and a euphoric feeling not found on this earth. Could their experiences be true? Marijuana or Cannabis has actually been proven to relieve stress, promote a feeling of ecstasy within the body, yet it also has properties that aid in the cure of certain ailments.
Medicinal properties of cannabis can be traced back to 2737 BCE, during the reign of Emperor Shen Nung. Cannabis is one of the 50 essential herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. A recent study done at the University of Oxford, showed that a brain with a certain THC level, begins to respond less to pain. This makes the pain almost undetectable. Another study proved that cannabis is helpful in treating glaucoma. With just two marijuana cigarettes a day, a glaucoma patient can begin to see a difference. This study was performed by the Institute of Medicine.
A review of six random controlled trials revealed that marijuana can in fact reduce spasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis. The study proved that marijuana has strong properties that reduce inflammation within the human body. It also provides a neuroprotective enhancement to those who consume marijuana. Research done by the Scripps Research Institute in California, actually showed that marijuana’s active ingredient, THC, was able to reduce and prevent deposit formations in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The study concluded that marijuana is actually more effective than commercially marketed drugs that are available to the general public today.
A study done in 2010 at the California Pacific Medical Center, showed that one of the ingredients in marijuana called cannabidol, actually stops breast cancer from spreading. This ingredient downregulates a gene called ID1 and this stops the spread of this cancer. The researchers were quite excited to further their studies and provide a stronger dosage of cannabidol to patients with breast cancer. At some point this may be researched to help other cancers. It is a great alternative to chemotherapy, which is quite toxic to the body and extremely invasive. Most would prefer to consume a little cannabis than go through that horrible experience, wouldn’t you say?
Another study on brain cancer also found that THC can actually reduce brain tumors, and eliminate brain cancer cells without disturbing healthy cells. The study was performed at the Complutense University of Madrid. Other studies proved some pretty nifty things as well, for instance for HIV patients. A study done at Columbia University proved that marijuana reduces the neuropathic pain associated with an HIV patient, as well as improved physical abilities and mood control.
It turns out that Marijuana is quite the soldier for those who consume it. Marijuana seems to be the kind of drug that does what it makes the consumer feel. It brings you true peace, not only in feeling, but also healing the ailments tormenting you. Some of the negative effects include extreme dry mouth, may impair judgement and motor reflexes. What do all those effects mean? Pretty much what most drugs mean. Do not operate heavy machinery, drive a car, or do any other activity that requires your full attention; that is all. All those popular rap songs were a little misleading weren’t they? Marijuana isn’t just a “feel-good” drug. It’s also a drug that heals the body.
