I tell this story only as a precaution, not as a bragging effort. The precaution referring to the situation of never willingly participate in a street fight! What happened with me could have been avoided. The story is, many years ago I worked at the airport. I was about 30 years old at the time, and my co-workers that day were around 18 years old. There were two of them, and they were talking trash all day about different subjects. Eventually, they got to the subject about how they as ‘young bucks’ could easily beat up any ‘old head’ – basically referring to me. Since I was already annoyed with these clowns and how they were neglecting work, I set the challenge off. I told the one kid who was talking most of the tough guy jazz, if he thought he could take me. He said he could knock me out. I told him to take the elevator with me upstairs to the garage and we could ‘spar’. As all 3 of us went to the elevator, I did not know that the two of them already made plans to ‘jump’ me.
But what they did not know – I had just started training in Gracie Jiu jitsu and had some previous training in Karate. Still, I had no idea what was about to happen. We got to the top of the garage, found a secluded spot, then me and the one kid squared off. Suddenly the other kid grabbed me from behind, around the body, but he was not pinning my arms. I quickly hit the kid in front of me with a solid palm strike to his nose. His eyes turned red and started tearing. He grabbed his face falling on a parked car in pain. But the other kid who was holding me, managed to take me down to the ground and mount me! As he began to throw punches, I instinctively did the Jiu Jitsu ‘Bump And Roll’ technique. He went flying completely off of me. I jumped up ran over to him throwing a straight right punch to his chin. He went out like a lamp.
Later, after cleaning up in the restroom, we didn’t say anything to each other at all. We just went about our normal workday quietly. The two actually started working properly. Before it was time to clock out for the day, they both expressed mutual respect to me.
Now although this turned out in my favor, it could have been disastrous. Martial arts saved me from a beat down, but playing instigator could have gotten me broke up something terrible. Never succumb to troublemakers, and expect the unexpected!
