There are bands that are a big deal, their name gets attention just about anywhere, and their fans will keep their music alive for years, while it’s a somewhat difficult level to reach it’s been done time and time again, and it’ll happen many more times as long as music is being made. (rollingstone) While reaching that echelon is possible, the step above it isn’t nearly as easy to attain, that next level being legendary status. (thetoptens) Certain bands, and solo artists, reach the legendary level with people artists like Eminem, Led Zeppelin, George Strait, and Marvin Gaye have earned this respect, you hear one of their songs and you stop and listen to it all the way through, they also have this massive crossover appeal as the music they create is just that good. (ledzeppelin) One easy way to gauge the success of a band or artist is to look at their sales numbers, one sure sign that a band is a flash in the pan is to see one hit song or album and then a flatline effect afterward with nothing else coming close to their past successes. (wikipedia) One band that’s hit legendary status, that just happens to be my favorite of all time, are the masters of hard rock, Metallica. (metalsucks)
Metallica has created some of the biggest hits in rock history, with albums spanning three decades so far, and one more on the way that will make it four decades of ruling the heavy metal ranks. (wikipedia) One of the most dubious distinctions in recent years is something that Metallica and Eminem have been sharing as the only artists that have at least six straight albums debut at number one, with Eminem taking the lead currently with his latest masterpiece the Marshall Mathers LP 2. (nme) While Eminem holds the current lead on album debuts, Metallica has one thing above him, as well as everyone else in the world of music in the Soundscan era, with just one of their albums reaching another threshold in sales. (billboard) The Black Album has now eclipsed the 16 million albums sold level, making it the highest selling album since sales have been tracked by Soundscan. This one album has been in the top 200 seemingly since it’s release date, while that could be seen as just an alright achievement, it becomes much more impressive when you realize the album debuted on August 12th of 1991, that’s a nearly 23 year reign. Say what you will about Metallica, but they’ve done more with one album than most other bands achieve in an entire career, which is one of the reasons I love them so much, here’s hoping their reign at the top continues with their next release.
