Spring is in the air. Birds are whistling, the snow has finally retreated, and beer lovers everywhere are eagerly awaiting the seasonal offerings. With so many varieties flooding the shelves at your local liquor store, it can be difficult to sort out the good from the truly great. Check out this list of my favorite spring seasonal beers and try a couple. There is something for every beer drinker here.
Green Flash Palate Wrecker
Brewed by the Green Flash Brewing Company in San Diego, CA, the Palate Wrecker truly lives up to its name. Only the experienced Double IPA lover need apply here. The grapefruit and resin notes provide for a extremely flavorful brew. Palate Wrecker has an ABV of 9.5% and goes for about $13/4-pack. An excellent choice when paired with something equally flavorful off the grill, such as a juicy steak.
Stone Imperial Russian Stout
This dark, thick Russian stout is brewed by Stone Brewing Company in Escondido, CA. It features a dry flavor and coffee overtones. Great for cool spring evenings around a fire. It has a high octane 10.5% ABV and you can find 22 ounce bottles for about $12. This heavy stout will fill you up. I recommend pairing it with a light chicken club sandwich.
Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company of Chico, CA named their spring IPA after the New Zealand imported hops, which give this brew a very piney flavor. It has a dark tan color and rich, malty aroma. It has a ABV of 6.7% and is priced at or around $8 for a 24 ounce bottle. This brew is an especially great choice when paired with seafood, with boiled lobster being a personal favorite.
This list would not be complete without including a Bavarian-style maibock. Summit Brewing Company of St. Paul, MN offers this spring selection that has a rich blond color and a toasty, sweet finish. The ABV is 6.5% and it is priced around $8 for a six-pack. I love enjoying a couple of bottles with sharp cheddar cheese and crackers.
Victory Swing Session Saison
Located in Downington, PA, the Victory Brewing company concocted this tasty saison using lemon zest and orange peel to bring a light and mouth-watering taste of the summer to come. The ABV is 4.5% and is priced at around $12 per six-pack. Tastes great with a hot dog at a baseball game!
