As a mother, I want to do what is best for my kids. Ever since I was a little kid, April would come and the ants would find me in whatever home I had. I hated the idea of using Raid or other chemicals to kill off the ants, because they have toxic chemicals in them. There are safer ways to get rid of ants so that children are not exposed to toxins. Here are my best and safest tips to get rid of ants.
Use Baby Powder
Most mothers have baby powder on hand. The way that I get rid of the ants is to put the powder in the areas that they frequent such as along baseboards. I place a line of baby powder so that it makes a trail. This helps to make a boundary line that the ants do not want to cross.
Use Vinegar and Water to Clean
For some reason, ants do not like the scent of vinegar. I use a half vinegar and water mix and spray down the areas where I have ants. This helps to prevent them from getting onto surfaces so that they eventually will exit the premises.
Do Not Leave Food Out
Many people leave food out without realizing it. It is important to remove dog bowls from the ground and put all food including fruit and bread in the fridge. People should vacuum up all crumbs after each meal. Ants can flock to even small particles of food quickly so by not feeding them it helps to get rid of them.
Get Rid of Water Sources
Ants are attracted to water. It is important for people to fix leaky faucets as they can lure ants into an area. Bathrooms can often be a place where they hide during those humid summer months.
Keep the Rooms in the Home at a Cool Temperature
I found that by having three air conditioners in the house running during the summer that the ant population was reduced. If homes are cooler, then this can often ward off ant invasions.
Use Cucumber Peelings
According to MotherEarthNews.com, “cucumber peelings are another favorite. They’re thought to be toxic to ants.” People should put the peelings out around where the ants are being seen so that they go away quickly. It is important for people to try several different options. It can take a few weeks before the ants go away completely depending on the nest of ants that has invaded the home.
