I was always a dog person. I love all animals, but cats used to annoy me. Then one day in Oct 2013, a starving, bony cat came up to me in my front yard and began winding around my legs. This amazing cat is one of the bravest and toughest little creatures I’ve ever met, and my life will never be the same.
I didn’t want a cat, but I didn’t want the poor thing to starve, so I began leaving out some food and water just outside the fence of my front yard. I couldn’t seem to be able to feed her enough until I realized she was nursing. Then I found six little kittens – three boys and three girls – in my yard. Her extreme hunger finally made sense.
Every time I think of her amazing acts of bravery, I get teary-eyed. I hear so many stories of newborn kittens becoming sick or dying, especially when there is extreme hunger involved. This was not the case with the mama cat I decided to name Miss Kitty. Even with her emaciated little frame, she was catching rabbits larger than herself, jumping a six-foot fence with the rabbit in her mouth, and keeping all six of her kittens fat and healthy.
Not one of those kittens had any health problems. She even nursed them all for several months, until I finally had to take her in to be spayed. That was the same day I took her to be microchipped, and officially adopted her.
When they were old enough, I had all the kittens spayed and neutered as well. I was planning on giving them away, but they are just so happy together as a family, so I decided to keep them. They are all outdoor kitties, and adore climbing the trees in the yard, cuddling, and grooming each other. Miss Kitty still enjoys grooming them and cuddling with them, and they are all very well-adjusted.
Cheetah is the fastest long-distance runner. Booty is the largest boy, with big white boots on his feet. Furball is almost as large as Booty, and quite a snuggle-bug. He even snuggles with my dog, Lulu! Tippy is black with a white-tipped tail and white chin. His main joy in life is snuggling with sister Cheetah. Gracie is the quickest when it comes to short, fast movements. Teensy enjoys hiding out by herself until daily family play-time in the early morning and early evening. Miss Kitty has raised six amazing kittens!
