So you walk into the cinema with your bag of popcorn (extra butter, please) and your date or significant other, and these days with your 3D glasses, ready to enjoy the latest film release. Here we list 5 genres of Hollywood films that you are always likely to encounter when you go to the movies:
1. The Comic Book Action Hero film
Whether it’s Batman, Superman, The Green Lantern, Cat woman, Captain America, Iron Man or any other Marvel action hero, these super human characters keep getting dished out ever so often on our big screens. The tale is always simple-a simple guy/girl that gets transformed into having extraordinary powers and the challenges he faces against a master villain. You never get tired of these films, or the special effects and these movies always make a huge profit at the box office at any given month of the year, so Hollywood is not going to stop doing them anytime soon.
2. The Romantic Comedy
We never tire of seeing a pretty Hollywood actress with the current heartthrob of the season dealing with the challenges of being in love and the complexities of sex, dating and relationships. These films are often targeted heavily during the Valentine’s day period, but they also appear year round, and predictably everything works out in the end, and usually people live happily ever after. Sometimes you also see this format in multi-star casts dealing with several leading actors and actresses and their love lives such as in “Love Actually,” “He’s just not that into you,” and “Happy New Year” among others.
3. Animated Films
These films have been a huge hit since Toy Story and other such films broke into the market 10 years ago. Now, you see these films in regular intervals at the cinema, with the latest Lego movie becoming a blockbuster hit with the masses. The feel good themes in such films, coupled with the fact that you can take your kids to see them makes them a win-win for all parties concerned. And let’s not forget all the money to be made from toys and other affiliated merchandise.
4. Oscar Potential Films
These are the movies that a lay moviegoer would deem as being dark, odd, strange, and tragic. You will often have big name Hollywood actors (Jack Nicholson, Matthew McConaughey, Meryl Streep, Leonardo di Caprio) and legendary directors in the film hoping to win an Oscar for the film. The stories are often depressing and riddled with challenges, and you will often leave the cinemas realizing that you are not likely to see this movie again anytime soon. Among recent movies in this category are “12 Years a Slave” and “Dallas Buyer’s Club.”
5. Hugely Popular books (with multiple parts) turned into Movies
Here we have the Harry Potter, Twilight, Lord of the Rings and Hunger Games series. These are the movies that come out with multiple parts (spanning several years) and a loyal following of readers who continue to be obsessed with the books. Often times these books deal with fantasy elements (though not always), which makes special effects the big draw for moviegoers to see how the books get adapted to the big screen.
So, there you have it! The five popular genres that Hollywood churns out at regular intervals for moviegoers to consume (these days popularly with the 3D for almost every film). If you have any other suggestions to add to the list, post it in your comments below.
