Florida is blessed with many large and beautiful lakes which make this region even more beautiful. Here is the list of the 3 largest lakes in this region.
Lake Seminole: The third largest lake in Florida. Lake Seminole is a 37,600 acre lake located in the lower Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basin at the border between southwestern Georgia and northwestern Florida. The lake was created in the period between late 1940s to the early 1950s with the construction of Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam on the Apalachicola River. The purpose of the lake was to aid navigation on the Chattahoochee and Flint River. The lake is a source of headwater to the Apalachicola River, and also a major supply of freshwater and nutrients to the areas located in the south including Apalachicola Bay.
Lake George: This is second largest lake in Florida. At 72 square miles, the lake stretches six miles wide and twelve miles long, and it drains about 3,600 square miles. This 46,000 acres lake commemorates King George III, dating back to the period from 1763 to 1783, when the British occupied the eastern part of Florida. Lake George has three of the most popular springs in the state known as Juniper, Silver Glen, and Salt Springs. Animals are frequently seen in this lake and scientists have observed white tailed deer, turkeys, red-cockaded woodpecker, and American Kestrels.
Lake Okeechobee: It is not only the largest lake in Florida, but the second largest freshwater lake in the United States. Lake Okeechobee covers the area of 730 square miles and receives water from rain and Kissimmee River. Despite the impressive size, the average depth of lake is only about nine feet. The lake is also a major source of freshwater to the people of south Florida. The lake provides ocean-like views on the northeast and south sides. On the west, the shore is thick marshland. The water is filled with bass and many other kinds of fish. In the hunting season carno-clad adventurers come up at boat ramps to visit the open waters. Snowbirds and retirees flock to this lake in the winter months, and most of these birds stay for the entire season.
