We all have elderly parents, grandparents or someone we’re actually caring for, but do they benefit sitting in front of the television from the time they get up and go to bed? In truth not really because it contributes to sedentary lifestyles which isnt healthy. It also decreases real time mental stimulation and often causes depression to settle in. Elderly people need more than a television to see there’s a world outside of an electrical machine that shows a picture. Television is fine to an extent,. but seniors are getting too comfortable in sitting in front of the television for hours on end and not getting out to have a social life. The very reason children should not live in front of the television either because it takes away from them learning about the world in real time.
Seniors have too much time on their hands and it should not be spent sitting in front of the television watching the news which contains a lot of violent and tragic things. It fuels paranoid behavior in seniors to where they start obsessing about stuff they watch on television. People with Alzheimer’s and dementia don’t benefit sitting in front of the TV because it does not help them to stay active. Sedentary lifestyles is harmful because seniors don’t get active which results in them sitting and laying around and not getting appropriate exercise and healthy stimulation. With the way technology runs today many seniors arent getting out much and it’s not healthy for them to just sit in front of the television for hours on end.
Encourage seniors to get out of the house and have an activity to do to discourage them from just laying around and sleeping all day. This is very important for seniors who have dementia because lack of stimulation is what makes their condition deteriorate faster. Seniors will benefit more when they’re not parked in front of the television it gives them something to do than to just eat, sleep, and watch television all day long. Sometimes it takes you to say to mom, dad, grandma, or grandpa that they need to get up and get out of the house instead of living in front of the television, eating, and sleeping. When seniors get out of the house and not parked up in front of the television they tend to be more apt to socialize and getting positive mental stimulation being around people their own age. This is why seniors will benefit by not being in front of the television from the time they get up until they go to bed. There’s a world bigger than what’s on television.
