COMMUNITY | Ted Nugent, the venerable rocker and gun enthusiast, said something utterly horrible and unacceptable about President Obama recently. It has caused an entertaining kerfuffle in Texas and has given Wendy Davis’ supporters something else to talk about.
Nugent referred to the president as a “chimpanzee” and added that he is, “a Chicago, Communist- raised, Communist-educated, Communist-nurtured, subhuman mongrel.”
This has some Republicans like Rand Paul and Rick Perry scrambling to condemn the statement and demand apologies all around, as they should. Oddly enough Greg Abbott, who, Nugent supports for governor of Texas, has been silent. This has caused the campaign of his Democratic rival, Wendy Davis, to explode in outrageous outrage.
If one wonders about the hypocrisy involved, considering the even ruder statements made by certain supporters of President Obama, such as Jeremiah Wright and Bill Maher, one could be forgiven. Wright cursing the United States in blasphemous terms and Maher called Sarah Palin a name that cannot be repeated certainly has not hurt the president’s political standing. Obama has not called on either men to apologize. Nugent being a jerk should not touch Abbott either.
It should not, but Abbott needs to be a better man than the president. Sadly, he needs to join the ritual and condemn and repudiate Nugent for his vile language. Otherwise Davis, whose various flipflops and lies about her biography, will seize upon Nugent as a drowning woman seizes upon a branch and will talk of nothing else. Besides, it actually is the right thing to do.
It goes almost without saying that Nugent should apologize and promise to in the future condemn the president more decorously. Too many of the president’s supporters pull the race card when people criticize him and his policies. It does no good for Nugent to give them ammunition. Besides, this would also be the right thing to do.
