Technology looks so much different now than it did even ten years ago. Things have been improved upon, combined, and replaced because of technological change. These changes have had a profound impact on the way we live our lives. Regardless of your views on technology you must admit that it has one way or another changed the way we operate, experience, and communicate with one another.
Is it good or bad?
Some point to the fact that technology has helped so much in the areas of research and medicine yet others explain that it has removed us from real relationships. After reading reader responses on the subject Sue Shellenbarger (2001), concluded that, “The impact of technology use seems to depend on the family.” She continued stating, “In families as elsewhere, technology is a neutral tool that exaggerates existing tendencies” (p. B.1). While there are obvious drawbacks to technology there are also major advantages to it as well. One should not overemphasize either the drawbacks or the advantages, but understand that it is not going anywhere and take advantage of the opportunities afforded to us by technology.
Nearly every tool that was used ten years ago looks much different today. Remember the PDA? Remember the MP3 Player? Remember the Cell Phone? Now we just call those things a smart phone! Not only does technology look different presently, but it will continue to look different in the next ten years. In fact Facebook just made a deal to acquire Oculus, a company that is making a name for itself through their virtual reality goggles. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook has stated, “Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face just by putting on goggles in your home” (Albergotti, 2014, n.p.). If Facebook has its way ten years from now technology will look continue to look vastly different than it does now.
Whether you love it, like it, or hate it technology is here to stay. There are certainly many good arguments concerning the drawbacks of technology in families and to our right to privacy, but for now technology appears to be here to stay. We must remember that while technology may have its drawbacks it also offers us many advantages that we never dreamed of in the past. We must learn to appreciate the luxuries afforded to us by technology and look for ways to limit it’s negative aspects in our everyday lives.
