Teaching your toddler academic skills can be a fun activity at home. The key to being successful in your efforts is your attitude. You must have fun when working with your child. There are many ways to teach your child in a fun way.
One way that I teach my child letters, words, numbers, and a foreign language is through fun cartoons or videos on YouTube. YouTube offers a large variety of learning videos I typically type in the YouTube search bar “preschool learning” and a host of videos shows up. Many miss the mark with these cartoons and videos because they just turn them on and plop their child in front of the television and walk away. This is a quick and easy way for the child to decide that learning is not fun and is work. It is important to view your child’s need to learn as an opportunity for you to teach them and an opportunity for you to bond with your child. So when you turn the video on, simply sit with them and make it a fun time. My son and I love to sing our ABC’s together, count, and say our Swahili words. I have noticed that when I watch the videos with him that we both have fun, but I have also noticed that he picks up the topics to be learned quickly. I also suggest that you pick just a few videos to watch at first so that your child can become confident with the knowledge that is being presented in each video, once you have determined that your child has mastered a particular video then you should move on to another video. The purpose of this is to increase your child’s confidence. When your child knows that they can watch a video about learning and know all the things that are being presented you can physically see her or his confidence growing.
The key elements that you need to focus on when teaching your child something through video are: provide social reinforcement through your presence, smiling, laughing, and repeating the things being said on the video, allowing your child to watch specific videos until her or his confidence rises which will be demonstrated by knowing all aspects of the video. If you follow these simple steps you can watch your child’s knowledge base grow by leaps and bounds.
