What is that saying, the only sure things in life are death and taxes? Well, I am not a fan of either. Years of doing my own taxes, only worrying about a W-2 and maybe a student loan interest form ruined me. Now, as a military wife with ALOT of investments & other money sucking things, tax time is A WHOLE LOT MORE DIFFICULT. This is only compounded by trying to do my taxes myself with 3 little children running around the house. Here are my tips on how to make it as easy as possible.
Keep It Organized
Nothing makes filing your taxes harder and more drawn-out than not having all of your paperwork in one spot. As the tax forms come in the mail, or as those messages pop-up in your email inbox, print them now and put everything in a single folder or envelope. All together. In one spot. Not all over the house. Catch my drift? I have learned this lesson by experience, and it takes companies a couple of weeks to get new copies of tax forms into your hands. Luckily though, most are available online. We need to keep these forms for a few years (up to 10 years), so having a paper copy makes sense & it definitely makes filing your own taxes a whole lot easier.
Set Aside Time Dedicated to Filing
If you are anything like me, you have many “irons in the fire” on a daily basis. I have tried and tried to do my taxes in the middle of the day, at times when I SWEAR the kids were watching SuperWhy. But, as I often say, my rear end has an alarm on it that calls out the my kids any time I sit down. So, wait until they are in bed. Or, like I did this year, suck it up one morning and set the alarm for 5am & do them before the kids get up. Coffee tastes better in a quiet house, and taxes are a lot easier to complete on Mommy/Daddy time, too.
Using these tips, we can make the hassle of tax time a little more enjoyable. Or, at least a little less gross.
