When it comes to taking care of your pet, it’s assumed that it’s difficult and takes a lot of hard work, harder than it is caring for children. Honestly, taking care of a pet is hard work, but it’s not more difficult than taking care of children. Your pet is like one of your children, so you would give them the exact same care you’d give your children. The only difference is, pets can’t be potty trained.
Just like children, a pet has to have regular checkups with their veterinarian. It’s important that every pet gets their shots, and make sure everything is healthy. Pets get sick with the same ailments that people do, so don’t assume they’ll be okay not going to the veterinarian regularly.
Be sure to get Grade A pet food that’s compatible with your pet’s digestive system. Make sure you’re careful as to get a brand of pet food that’ll give your pet the proper nutrition it needs. A lot of pet foods give you the impression that their ingredients are 100% natural and healthy, when they’re not always what they’re cracked up to be. So just like you would be careful and read the nutritional information with your own groceries, make sure you do that with your pet’s groceries as well. You can even do research online as to which brand of pet food is better and which ones to stay away from.
When it comes to treats for your pet, don’t hesitate in making healthy variations of it at home. Like with doggy treats, for example, get creative and find a good recipe that your dog would love. The same thing applies if you have a cat also. Don’t forget the water. They need plenty of water, especially when it’s hot. So keep that bowl filled at all times.
Just like people need to stay active in order to maintain their health, your pet needs the same thing. If you have a dog, take it out for walks regularly, not just for doing its business, but also to have fun, and run around somewhere in the park. Pets need exercise, otherwise it’ll end up out of shape and overweight, and no one wants that for their pet.
Cats aren’t usually walked, in fact most end up becoming strays if they’re not trained to stay close to home. So with a cat, I would recommend a good play station that will keep your cat entertained, especially when it’s home alone. This is another good thing for your cat because cats like to scratch up everything they see. A good toy or play station will keep them occupied enough so that they won’t think about scratching up everything in site. It’ll keep them active so they can remain healthy.
This can sometimes be difficult to do because everybody has to go to work. Remember, your pet doesn’t want to be left home alone, so consider taking steps to make sure your pet gets the attention it needs. Most of the time when your pet is home alone, it does one thing or another to mess up your house, with accidents or with damaging clothes and furniture. This means your pet is trying to tell you something so make sure you’re listening. You can take your pet to a pet daycare, or have a pet sitter. You’d be surprised at how similar taking care of your pet is similar to taking care of your child. When you are at home, make sure its getting enough love and attention. Just like children, a pet wants to feel like you love it, and that it belongs there with you. So make sure you’re giving enough attention, not enough to spoil it, but enough for it to know it’s loved. Neglect is a no no.
Pets are not born knowing what’s right and what’s wrong. You have to teach it to obey and to listen to you, as well as teach them what to do and what not to do, the same way you do with children. With dogs especially, people assume that all it needs is a good obedient school. That’s not true. Dogs have the ability to understand us, so talk to it, train it, and discipline if it does something wrong. As mentioned earlier, your pet is like one of your children, so treat it that way. Don’t go crazy and assume you can just tell it to “go to its room.” Remember common sense here, folks.
Always make sure your pet is bathed, and brushed regularly. No one wants a dirty pet, and even if your pet doesn’t seem to care, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t want to be itchy and sticky all the time. A pet wants to feel just as comfortable in its skin as you do. Even if they don’t like water, make sure they’re getting clean either way.
When it comes to a cat or dog’s nails, this is very important. They will grow to the point where they will need to be trimmed, otherwise your floors and furniture will be scratched while it’s no fault of theirs. Those nails have to get trimmed. Be very careful and do this properly. Their nails are not like ours. You can’t just take a nail clip and cut it off because it’ll hurt the delicate areas within their nails if you do it that way. Care must be taken so they won’t experience pain when you’re trimming their nails. Do some research on what you can use to do this. Or you can simply take them to a professional so they can get de-clawed without worry.
If you would rather not cut their nails, then maybe you should invest in a scratching post. This is especially good for a cat. It’ll keep them occupied and trim their nails at the same time.
With a dog especially, they have to be walked for a certain amount of time throughout the day. If you don’t walk them, they will cause accidents, and they end up getting punished, when it’s not their fault. When you have to go, you have to go. Plain and simple. Make sure they are being walked enough times. This may take a little more effort because they have to be walked late at night, and in the early mornings before you go to work. They are also going to have to be walked during the day when you’re not there. You really need to consider how they are going to do their business when no one’s there to walk them.
There is something called The Potty Patch that can be used for a cat and dog. Maybe you should invest in that if there are going to be times where you pet is going to be alone during the day. Teach them how to use it and see where you can go from there.
