The 2014 Swamp Pop Music Festival will be held on July 18-19, 2014 at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center’s indoor Trademart Building in Gonzales, Louisiana. The Swamp Pop Music Festival is put on to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and sponsored by Price LeBlanc Toyota & Nissan.
The Swamp Pop Music Festival started back in 1998 when a swamp pop artist by the name of Cody Marchand came up with the idea to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to find a cure for the disease. He got together with a friend, David Eastridge and discussed the idea of a musical fundraiser. The idea touched a personal spot with David, as his niece Sarah had recently been diagnosed with the terminal illness.
Cody and David put their heads together and started the Swamp Pop Music Festival along with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Baton Rouge office. The festival has grown each year and is now considered to be one of the best festivals in southern Louisiana.
Swamp Pop is a traditional type of music in southern Louisiana that became popular in the 1950’s. The sound blends Cajun music with the new sounds of 50’s rock and roll for a totally new sound. You may be familiar with the popular hit songs “Walkin’ to New Orleans” or “”Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” Those two songs are classic Swamp Pop.
The 2014 Swamp Pop Music Festival will be bringing in local and national bands to play for the two day event. However, the concerts are not the only activities for this festival. There will also be a jambalaya cook-off that starts on Friday and continues on Saturday for a 2nd Heat before the final cook off on Saturday afternoon. Prizes are awarded to the first through third place finishers.
On Saturday the festival sponsors a Motorcycle Poker Run called “Crusin For A Cure.” The run starts at 8:00 a.m. and runs through 4:00 p.m. starting and ending at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center.
A car and truck show will also be happening on Saturday with all makes and models welcome for entry. The entry fee for the car and truck show is $25.00, which is tax deductible since the money is going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This event runs all day long with prizes awarded in several different categories.
