Some of us are more prone to being out amongst nature and love doing anything that involves the outdoors. This may include fishing, hiking, or camping. In order to do these things and have fun there are plenty of safety tips that you need along the way, especially if you’re in an area that is far from civilization. Having these survival tips is important in case you ever find yourself in a life or death situation.
When you’re out in the wilderness, there are certain basic needs that you’re going to have to have with you, and that includes water, food, shelter for sleep and warmth, first aid gear, and a compass to assist you with your direction. Having these things are of the utmost importance because this will help you survive in case something happens and you can’t make it home right away. Anything can happen along the lines of an injury or simply getting lost, so having things to help you in these cases are essential.
Basic needs doesn’t just stop with the above items. It’s also good to have certain weapons such as pocket knives, a machete, or even a rifle or shotgun for extreme cases. This will definitely come in handy if you happen to end up in an area that has dangerous wild animals.
This is another important aspect of surviving in the wilderness, is KNOWING what to do in certain situations, what you need, and how to get it if you don’t have it. If you run out of food, it’s best to learn how to hunt or go searching for sustenance. If you run out of water, it’s important for you to know how and where to go looking for more as having water is more important than having food in extreme cases. The body can survive longer without food than it can without water. So if all else fails, make sure you have water!
Whether you have a sleeping bag or not, think about what you’re going to do if you run into bad weather. If you have a tent and it’s too weak or it’s become damaged, you need to learn how to build one from scratch. You don’t have to be a contractor or architect. But knowing how to build a small shelter for yourself that’s safe, and durable is important. This will come in handy if you ever get lost and need to sleep throughout the night before moving on the next day to find your way out. Making a fire to get you through the nights is also important, as this will also be a way for you to cook your food.
Speaking of getting lost, having a good sense of direction is a good thing, but not all of us have this special feature. This is why having a compass is important. If it becomes lost, or even if it leads you to a dead end, as it can happen sometimes, you need to know how else you’re going to be able to find your way so you won’t stay lost. Understand which direction is which; north, south, east, and west. This way, you can know where you are and what direction you need to go in, in order to reach safety. Take some lessons from my people, the Native Americans, and learn how to read the stars. If this is not your forte, then it’s best to become familiar with the area you’re in before drifting off by yourself. Leave landmarks or a trail so that you can find your way back to where you need to be.
It’s also best to know how to read the weather signs so you can predict whether or not you’re going to run into bad weather. If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation where you have to face a wild animal or two, knowing what to do to keep yourself out of harm’s way could in fact save your life. All of these things will help you survive in the wilderness but nothing more so than the WILL to survive. If you don’t have the will, it’s best to stay away from the wilderness and stick with the city.
As mentioned above, if you happen to run into a wild animal that can basically do more harm to you than good, you need to have a good handle on the situation. The most important thing is not to panic. Animals can sense your fear and they will capitalize on that. Stay calm, cool, and collected. This will help you to think and not do something that will put you in an even more dangerous situation. Animals run fast, so running from them won’t help you. You need to know what to do to scare them off or trick them into going after something else. If it’s necessary, use one of your weapons, which you should always have with you while you’re in the wilderness.
Learn how to prevent yourself from encountering an animal that can hurt you. Masking your scent is a great way, as well as staying away from the areas they are known to be in. This is why drifting off by yourself is big no no, unless you’re adept at handling yourself in any situation. If you’re a novice, make sure you have somebody with you. Always be aware of your surroundings and be aware of anything that can be potentially dangerous. Know how to treat any wounds or injuries, hence, the first aid kit. Learning first aid, CPR, and any other lifesaving techniques isn’t such a bad idea either. This could come in handy for snake bites or something trivial like insect bites. What are you going to do if you have to splint a broken bone? Think about these things to help avoid a dangerous situation
This is what you should get before venturing out of civilization. You can get lessons from someone you know who is adept at wilderness survival, or you can go elsewhere to get the same training that will teach you all of the above scenarios and how to handle them. Try going off with someone a few times before venturing off by yourself. Remember, you want to be safe and confident that you can remain that way.
