After eighteen years under your parent’s roof, you’ve finally gone off to college. After all the work of getting your education paid for, the big day had finally come for you to move into your new dorm. It isn’t until you’ve said your goodbyes to your parents that you realize jsut how clueless you are. How can you survive four years without mom making your pizza rolls? College shouldn’t be scary, it should be exciting! Be sure you are prepared.
The following guide is based on personal experience and the experiences of friends. While every situation varies, this is the simplest yet most vital information that can be given to a college freshman.
1) Make Friends with your dorm mate immediately
The two of you are most likely going to live together for the entirety of the year, at least. Playing nice from the start can save you from hours of frustration and irritation. You don’t have to be best of friends but think of them like a younger sibling. They do annoying things and you’re forced to live with them but you can’t get too angry or you’ll get grounded. Since your parents aren’t there to ground you, you’ll pretty much just be getting angry over and over again with no result.
2) Keep your dorm clean
You never know who you might meet in college and invite over to your dorm. It may be your future wife or best friend. Don’t allow them to see how disgusting you can be from the beginning. Remember, this dorm is not just a bedroom. Your dorm is your home and no one wants to live in filth. Keeping tidy also helps ease tension between dorm mates. If nothing else, it’ll encourage your dorm mate to clean up a bit as well.
3) Don’t forget why you’re really there
College can be one giant distraction from itself. From social activities to simply lounging around the dorm, you should never forget your studies. No one ever obtained a college degree by slacking off. Put your nose in the books and keep your grades up. You can still socialize but being a college student doesn’t mean you’re free from homework.
4) Make Ramen in a coffee pot
Most campuses allow coffee pots in the dorms. These pots are perfect for making ramen noodles. Simply break up some ramen, put it in the pot, pour some water in the back and press start. Even if you’ve got a meal card, this is a quick and easy meal for students who need to get a few essays done. If nothing else, it’ll be a fun story to tell your kids someday.
College should be the best four years of your life. Don’t turn it into a nightmare by being childish. Allow yourself to grow and learn not only from you classes but from your environment. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll survive. Don’t forget to call your parents constantly and remind them you’re alive. Be prepared for the most memorable time of your life.
